On this page I give you a number of links to some of my favorite freeware programs and after that a few of my favorite sites with links to freeware.
K9 is an addition to e-mail programs which classifies spam e-mails so you can easily sort those to a seperate folder for deletion.
After the program has been trained for a while (the program needs to know which e-mails you do or do not consider spam) it will correctly recognize virtually all e-mails as spam or non-spam. At the moment it is considerably above 99% correctly classified e-mails for me.
For discussion and more information about this program look in the K9 forum http://keir.net/bb/.
Inforapid Search & Replace is a program you can use to search in files on you computer for words (pattern matching is possible).
The results are shown as excerpts of the found text with clickable links that will show you the postion in the text where it was found.
The program can search inside many filetypes when the Microsoft Office/Word filters are present like doc, html, rtf, pdf (you need to download a seperate program for that as mentioned on the site) and many others.
Tom's eTextReader is a program which allows you to read texts or e-books on your computer as if you were reading a book. Especially when reading long texts is far more comfortable using this program than using a normal text viewer or editor.
It remembers the location where you were the previous time and can automatically go back to that position on startup. It can also generate an index, you can set font and fontsize, bookmarks and a number of other settings.
Besides plain text files the program can also handle html and rtf files and can also extract files to read from zip files. In addition the beta version can also read Microsoft Word doc files.
IrfanView is a very easy to use image viewer which can also make a number of changes to images and save them to another format.
The program knows all major and many minor image formats. Multiple images can also be changed in one go using batch conversion. Very useful when you need to rotate many images to the left or right or want to change them to grayscale.
The Proxomitron is a program that filters internet pages and replaces those parts that the user doesn't want. Among other things it is possible to remove adverts, popups, sound, blinking text or gifs and you can disable (java)scripts and cookies.
The program can be downloaded at http://www.castlecops.com/postt24306.html.
There exists a yahoo forum where you will be helped when you have questions about the usage of the program https://groups.yahoo.com/group/prox-list/.
The very complete filterset that I use is made by Grypen, but the standard filters are also good enough for most people.
Before using it though you should really read the help to get an understanding what the program does.
Metapad is a very useful program to edit plain textfiles. It can be used as a replacement of Notepad. The program is very small and fast but still has many more features than Notepad like opening large files, a list of favourites and insert predefined text.
Mozilla FireFox is the best browser that exists at the moment. It's secutity is far better than Internet Explorer and you can extend it's capabilities in many ways. It's very easy to change the way it looks by choosing another them. You can also enhance it's functionality by adding extensions. To name a few: the google bar to search using Google, AdBlock to block those annoying adds, Foxy Tunes to control your music player (WinAmpt, iTunes, ...) from within FireFox, Gestures to use mouse movements to start certain actions and many more.
Pegasus Mail is an excellent e-mail program which. It is far better secured against viruses and dangerous scripts than Outlook Express. Besides that there are many ways you can filter you e-mails, you can use distribution lists to handle sending of newsletters and a whole lot of other nice features.
To import your e-mails from Outlook Express into Pegasus you can use the program DbxConv.
